Dưới đây là một số kiến thức cơ bản của thì quá khứ tiếp diễn bạn cần nắm:

1.1 Công thức cấu trúc thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Khẳng định	S + was/were + V-ing Ví dụ: She was doing housework when the police came (Cô ấy đang làm việc nhà thì cảnh sát tới)
Phủ định	S + was/were + not + V-ing Ví dụ: He wasn’t joking, Anna! (Anh ấy không đùa đâu, Anna)
Nghi vấn	1. Yes/No Question Q: Was / Were + S + V-ing? A: Yes, S + was/were. No, S + wasn’t/weren’t. Ví dụ: Q: Were her friends dancing while she was singing? (Có phải bạn cô ấy nhảy khi cô ấy đang hát không?) A: Yes, they were/ No, they weren’t.
	2. Wh-Question Q: WH-word + was/ were + S + V-ing? A: S + was/ were + V-ing +… Ví dụ: What was he working on at noon? (Anh ấy đang làm gì lúc trưa vậy?)

1.2 Cách dùng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn được dùng để:

Diễn tả một hành động đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm trong quá khứ.

Ví dụ: Anna was having dinner at 9 o’clock. (Anna đang ăn tối lúc 9 giờ)

Diễn tả những hành động xảy ra đồng thời trong quá khứ.

Ví dụ: While he was driving, his girlfriend was singing in the car. (Khi anh ấy đang lái xe thì bạn gái của anh ấy hát trong xe)

Diễn tả hành động đang xảy ra thì có hành động khác xen vào.

Ví dụ: When she was concentrating on my work, the bell rang (Khi cô ấy đang tập trung làm việc thì tiếng chuông reng lên)

Diễn tả một hành động từng lặp đi lặp lại trong quá khứ và làm phiền đến người khác.

Ví dụ: They were always complaining about the food at the canteen. (Họ lúc nào cũng than phiền về đồ ăn ở căng tin.)

1.3 Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ tiếp diễn khi trong câu xuất hiện các từ:

At + giờ + thời gian trong quá khứ. (at 5 o’clock yesterday,…)
At this time + thời gian trong quá khứ. (at this time last year,…)
In + năm (in 2001, in 1992)
In the past

Ví dụ: What was she doing at 10 a.m. last Monday? (Cô ấy đã làm gì vào lúc 10 giờ sáng hôm qua?)
